Women lose bid to sue Qatar Airways over invasive exams

A U.S. federal appeals court on Friday rejected a bid by a group of female former Qatar Airways employees to pursue a lawsuit accusing the carrier of imposing discriminatory and invasive medical examinations on flight attendants.

The women, from Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and the United States, had accused the airline of forcing them to undergo gynecological examinations if they were suspected of pregnancy.

The judges said that while the alleged conduct may have violated Qatar’s labor laws, the women could not pursue a discrimination lawsuit in the United States because they had not shown that the carrier’s conduct had enough of a connection to U.S. commerce.

Qatar Airways has denied the allegations, saying the exams were routine measures for all employees dealing with hazardous materials.
